The first Bolivian gold coins were minted by the Spaniards at the Potosi mint during the Reign of Philip II (1556-1598). The mintmark of a Bolivia Gold Coin is a monogram for the letters PTS and the Bolivian Gold Coin distribution was very extensive. Spanish colonial Bolivian Gold Coins were minted through 1825. Republican Bolivia Gold Coins were issued starting in 1827.

This Bolivia gold coin has obverse features a bust of Simon Bolivar (b1783-d1830) surrounded by the Spanish legend LIBRE POR LA CONSTITUTION (Free by the Constitution) and BOLIVAR at the bottom. The reverse of this Bolivian Gold Coin has a Bolivian scene of a llama, mountains, and a sheaf of wheat. The Spanish legend REPUBLICA BOLIVANA is around the top. The mintmark (a monogram of SLP), of this Bolivia Gold Coin is the denomination 1 S, the date 1846, and the assayer mark (R for Felipe Ramirez de Arellano)
