BOCA RATON BUSINESSMAN SETS WORLD RECORD

Boca Raton's 27 year resident and businessman , William Youngerman of William Youngerman, Inc., a rare coin and precious metals dealership set a new world record price for a 1902 series national bank note from the town of Fort Meade, Florida.

$132,250.00 was the final price paid by the firm at a recent auction in St. Louis Missouri.

The world record price ends an 85 year search by collectors for a note on the bank which was chartered on Youngerman's birthday May 12 th , in the year 1913.

Polk counties history is believed to have begun with the settlement of Fort Meade in the 1840's, a time when forts around Florida provided protection for settlers during and after the Seminole wars. General Twigg commissioned Lt. George G. Meade to select a location for the fort, and named it after him.

Years later, Lt. Meade would become General George G. Meade in the U.S. Army and commander of the Union troops at the Battle of Gettysburg.

The 1890 $1000 Treasury Coin Note also features General Meade's portrait on it, a note currently worth around $1,000,000.

The First National Bank of Fort Meade Florida was chartered under the National Bank Act of 1863 and signed into law by President Abraham Lincoln. The national currency act continued until the Great Depression of 1933, which saw the end of many banks.

Under these new banking laws banks could receive a charter by placing a minimum of $25,000 in U.S. Bonds on deposit with the treasury department, for which they would receive up to 90% of the value of the bonds in U.S. printed currency, called national bank notes. These notes would state on them their backing, denomination, the name of the bank, its charter number, and the town and state of its location. They remain legal tender to this very day and are affectionately referred to as “hometown currency”.

There were 109 such charters granted to banks in the state of Florida in 59 different towns.

Over 12,000 banks throughout the country issued currency during this period in our history.

It was this very act that saved the Union financially during the civil war, when currencies were quickly becoming worthless. Most of the notes issued during this period have long ago been redeemed by the treasury however those remaining have left us with a great piece of our country's financial history, and every note has a story to tell.

Notes were signed by the cashier and president of each bank, children and grandchildren of these signers still seek them out as well as collectors for their hometown and state.

Such is the case with William Youngerman who has assembled the largest collection of Florida's financial history through its currency, bonds, and tokens, from Florida's territorial period up to modern times.
