Gold Coins Melted
It
is reported that J Aaron, a coin dealer, melted 341,000 of these coins in 1984,
when the mint allowed the coins to be sold at the previous days spot price for
gold. This was a costly error on the part of the United States Mint.
It
allowed the purchaser to buy gold at the previous days spot price, melt the coins
and sell the gold for a profit.
This
leaves only 68,000 of the Louis Armstrong Gold Coin as of 1986, the last
time a report was issued regarding these coins. How many are there today?
The
Louis Armstrong Gold Coin is not only a collectors item, but has the added value
of owning gold bullion at the same time.
